Track team performs well in first outings

Competition is finally under way for the Avonworth/Northgate track team, as they competed in the Trojan Track and Field Classic at Center High School on Saturday.

Overall the team performed well and had a few top six finishers. On the girls' team, Samiya Ferguson finished fourth in the 100 meter dash. In addition, Bridgit Walters finished fifth in the 1600 meter run and Mikell Schlumpf finished second in the 300 meter hurdles.

On the boys' team Mackenzie Grey finished fifth in the 200 meter dash. Ryan Schmid finished third in the 800 meter run. In the 300 meter hurdles, Josh Douglass placed fourth. Douglass also finished fifth in both the long jump and triple jump. Lastly, the 3200 meter relay team of Schmid, Houston Hunt, Scott Beatty and Jimmy Silay finished in fourth place.

After coming off their first invitation of the season, the team hosted their first section meet against Highlands and Hampton.

On the girls' team, Schlumpf finished third in the 100 meter hurdles and first in the 300 meter hurdles. Ferguson finished third in the 100 meter dash. Ehlana Gray finished second in both the 400 meter run and the 200 meter dash. Walters finished second in the 800. Sam DiCaprio finished third in the 200 meter dash, and Alison Gusew finished second in the 3200 meter run. Overall the girls' team lost to Hampton, 116-25, and beat Highlands 80-60.

On the boys' team, the 3200 meter relay of Elliot Miller, Schmid, Hunt, and Beatty finished in first. Patrick Parra finished first in the 110 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles. Tony Bevon finished second in both the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash. Schmid finished second in the 400 meter run and first in the 800 meter run. Hunt finished in third in the 400 meter run. Justin Parra finished in third in the 300 meter run and Shaun Armstrong placed third in the discus.

In addition, the 1600 meter relay team of Patrick Parra, Douglass, Hunt and Schmid finished first. Overall, the boys' team lost to Hamtpon,72-63, but beat Highlands 79-57.
