Several Northgate-Avonworth swim team members set new school records while participating in the WPIAL championships last Thursday and Friday at the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Hall.
On the first day of competition, the girls' 200 medley relay team consisting of Amanda Silay, Alison Gusew, Bridgit Walters and Shannon Burns placed 25th. Next, the boys' 200 medley relay team of Jimmy Silay, Aaron Makatura, Robert Johnston and Connor Mulligan also finished in 25th place.
Annie Gould swam the 200 yard freestyle. She placed 14th overall, while setting a new school record time of 2:04.24. Jimmy Silay also competed in the 200 freestyle, where he finished in 16th place. The final event of the first day was the girls' 200 freestyle relay, in which Amanda Silay, Kate Ward, Walters and Gould finished in 18th place.
The second day of competition allowed three more school records to be broken.
In the girls' 100 freestyle, Gould placed 14th and set a new school record time of 56.86.
Following her performance, Jimmy Silay set a new school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.41, finishing in 10th place.
The final event for the swim team was the girls' 400 freestyle relay. The relay team of Amanda Stone, Walters, Amanda Silay, and Gould swam a new school record time of 3:59.44 to finish in 13th place.
Overall, the girls' team finished in 32nd with a total of 14 points. The boys' team finished in 31st with a total of 8 points.
