Suspect arrested with grenade simulator

Ohio Township Police News

Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) agents were called to Ohio Township Wednesday afternoon when police discovered what appeared to be a hand grenade in the console of a car stopped in connection with a possible attempted burglary in Franklin Park.

According to Ohio Township Police Chief Beaver Micklos, a Franklin Park woman called 9-1-1 after finding two men at the rear of her house. The men fled in a vehicle that was described to local police agencies. Ohio Township Police stopped the car on Nicholson Road.

Micklos said that in searching the vehicle, officers found what turned out to be a grenade simulator, used in military training. The chief said that although the simulator does not contain shrapnel, as a real hand grenade would, it has the same concussive power as a live grenade and could severely injure someone if it exploded.

The driver of the car, Johnny Lee Harvard, 33, of the North Side, was charged with recklessly endangering another person, risking a catastrophe and possession of an incendiary device.

At the time of his arrest, Micklos said, Harvard was wearing an ankle bracelet required as a condition of bail on a robbery charge for which he is awaiting trial.

No charges have been filed against Harvard or a passenger in the car in connection with the Franklin Park incident, although Micklos said that their story about picking up dog food they had read about on Craig’s List did not stand up under investigation.
