Suspect arrested in Bellevue robbery

William Scannell, 35, was arrested Thursday night for the robbery of a Bellevue doctor and his wife that occurred Monday evening.

Police have arrested a man they say fired several shots and assaulted a Bellevue doctor and his wife Wednesday evening before stealing narcotics.

Police were called to the Suburban General Professional Building at the corner of Lincoln and South Jackson avenues shortly after 5:30 p.m. when shots were reported fired in an office on the basement floor of the building.

According to Allegheny County Police, William Scannell was a patient of Dr. Parviz Jian, and had an appointment at the office. When he arrived, police say, he assaulted the receptionist, who is the doctor’s wife, as well as the doctor, and shot at them in an attempt to obtain prescription drugs. and cash.

Bellevue Police Chief Matt Sentner said that Scannell entered the office wearing a mask and assaulted the receptionist because she was wearing a belt that contained narcotics dispensed in the office. The doctor was injured when he came to the aid of his wife, Sentner said.

Sentner said that Scannell ran out of the office with the narcotics and cash after firing four shots.

Law enforcement officers from Bellevue, Avalon, Ohio Township, Ross Township, West View, the City of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County and the county sheriff’s office responded as the Lincoln Avenue business district and Allegheny General Hospital - Suburban Campus were shut down for several hours as officers searched for the armed suspect.

Sentner said that K-9 officers tracked Scannell from the Professional Building, down South Jackson Avenue and over to South Starr Avenue, then to McKinley Avenue in Avalon, where a man was seen running with a female to a parked car, in which they then drove off.

The doctor and his wife were treated at AGH-SC, then released.

Sentner said that Scannell is not known to have any connection to Bellevue except for being a patient at the medical office. County police say that he most recently lived in Bloomfield, but also has ties to the North Side.

Police say that he has used several aliases in the past, including Jason Adams, Phillip Adams, Jason Adom, and combinations of the names William, James and Phillip.

An arrest warrant that has been issued charges Scannell with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of robbery, three counts of recklessly endangering another person, one count of theft and one violation of the Uniform Firearms Act.

The 35-year-old man is 5’10” tall and weighs approximately 160 lbs., police say. He is believed to have shortened or shaved his beard recently.
