Avonworth sophomore Holly Hunt turned in books and wrapped up the school year a bit earlier than her classmates, traveling last Friday to Niigata, Japan where she will spend 11 months as an exchange student in the American Field Service program.
"My mom was an AFS student when she was in high school, spending time in Colombia, so she helped me with the application process," Holly said.
During her 11-month stay, Holly will live with a host family and attend school, which, she said, differs from American scheduling.
"The school year starts now in Japan and they have short breaks each season rather than one long summer break."
While her knowledge of the language is limited to what she has learned on her own, she feels confident that she won't have any communication problems. "My Japanese is not that good, but I'll work hard at it. Also, my Japanese family speaks English."
Holly admits that she will miss her family and friends, but she is excited about "…the opportunity to live in a new country. I can't wait to see and experience everything."
Holly is the daughter of Gary and Madonna Hunt of Ohio Township
