Spruce Run wall repair

Ben Avon Council unanimously accepted a bid Tuesday from Pampena Landscaping & Construction to make repairs on a wall along Spruce Run that is crumbling and causing problems and concerns for residents.

Borough engineer Ed McGee said he had estimated the cost at $125,000, and Pampena came in with the low bid at $125,765. The second-lowest bid was $132,798, and McGee said he reviewed both of them, but recommended Pampena not only because of the lower cost, but also because the company has already done work for Ben Avon, including the Rostraver wall reconstruction and storm drainage system replacement project it is currently working on.

Hal Deily of Spruce Street is one resident who is particularly eager to have the work begin. He has come before council previously to talk about the situation, saying that the water runs through his and his neighbors' yards. He was in attendance at Tuesday's meeting and said because of the recent rains, one hole is about 50 percent larger than before, and one section is almost completely choked off from debris that has come down. He said street signs and pieces of metal can be seen in the rubble.

McGee said Pampena will finish Rostraver first, and he expects work to begin on Spruce after Labor Day. He said the work should take about three weeks.
