Shooting-related search ends in drug bust

The search of an Avalon home in connection with the recent drive-by shooting in Bellevue ended with no arrests for the shooting, but three people charged with narcotics-related offenses.

Police officers from Bellevue, Avalon and Ohio Township entered the home at 304 S. Home Ave. just after 6 a.m. last Friday. According to Bellevue Police Chief Matt Sentner, his department obtained information that two youths seen running from the scene of a drive-by shooting on Lincoln Avenue on Feb. 8 had gone to that house.

Sentner said that evidence gathered by police from the scene of the shooting indicates that the occupants of both cars may have been shooting at each other. Initially, witnesses reported that someone in a white Durango had fired at the two young men in a gray Oldsmobile, causing the Olds to hit a parked car at the Grant Avenue intersection.

The search warrant obtained by Bellevue Police allowed officers to search for weapons and other items that might be connected to the shooting. During that search, however, Bellevue Police Officer Mike Hudson is reported to have observed five stamp bags of suspected heroin in a plant inside the house. At that point, the search was stopped until Avalon Police Chief Tom Kokoski obtained another warrant to search the home for narcotics.

No additional drugs, and no paraphernalia, were discovered in the later search. Three people were, however, charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver, and criminal conspiracy. Charged were Nicole Anderson, 38, of South Home Avenue; Deian Wofford, 18, of Chautauqua Court, Pittsburgh 15214; and a 17-year-old juvenile.

Police say that the same three were charged after a search warrant was executed at the same house just over a year ago, in January of 2010.
