The name of the Neale/Stewart Scholarship Fund has been changed to honor the memory of another Avalon High School graduate.
The fund originally was established by classmates of Howard Stewart (Avalon Class of 1950) and George Neale (Class of ‘51). Stewart graduated from Geneva College, where he led the basketball team to the NAIA playoffs in Kansas City. He was coaching high school basketball in New Jersey when he died of cancer at the age of 28. Neale graduated from Muskingum College and became a member of the Blue Angels - the Navy precision flight team. He was killed in a plane accident in Florida at the age of 29.
The fund now also will honor David Brandon (Avalon Class of ‘69), who graduated from Penn State University in 1973 and Duquesne School of Law in 1978. At the time of his death from cancer in 2008, he was deputy administrator for the Allegheny County court system.
A $1,000 scholarship is presented annually to a Northgate High School senior. For more information, contact Judy Gadd, 285 McKinley Ave., Avalon, PA 15202, (412)761-4526.
