The Pennsylvania Middle School Association has honored Avonworth Middle School principal Tom Ralston with the Administrator's Award, an honor that recognizes his achievements in promoting middle school education and encouraging professional development.

Now in his fifth year as an Avonworth principal, Ralston has earned high marks from his students, as well as from PMSA, with three eighth graders expressing their views.

"Mr. Ralston is the most amazing and understanding principal in the state," said Natalie Malloy.

Tyler Bolster said that the principal can identify with students' needs. "Mr. Ralston understands kids our age, and we can really communicate and relate with him."

And most important of all of the qualities a successful principal should possess, Jonathan Quinn observed, "He's like the wise old man in Kung -Fu movies."

Instructor Kelly Walbush, who nominated Ralston for the honor, wrote in her recommendation letter, "He worked with various community members, parents, business owners, teachers and students to help our district unlock the "unique genius" of every student. Tom's openness to suggestions and his ability to work well with everyone endears him to anyone who meets him."

Faculty member Mike Lincoln summarized the feelings of staff and students, saying, "We are very fortunate to have Mr. Ralston as our principal. His leadership, both instructional and organizational, has been the foundation for our success as a 'School to Watch.' He is a true leader and friend to the entire learning community."
