The Avalon Police Department’s war on drugs -- and drug dealers -- continued last weekend as officers conducted surveillance and netted 30 stamp bags of heroin and one suspected drug dealer.
Police say they observed a drug transaction at the corner of Orchard and Cleveland avenues on Saturday, Dec. 4. Layton Burks, 21, of Florence Avenue, was charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver, delivery of 10 stamp bags of heroin, resisting arrest and possession of a small amount of marijuana. He was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.
Another man also ended up in jail, after a side trip to the hospital, after apparently overdosing on heroin at Avalon Library on Dec. 2. Police were called to the library that afternoon when the man was found slumped over in a chair in the computer lab. Police say they found 10 stamp bags of heroin and nine syringes in the possession of William Cook Sr., 32, of West View. He was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia. Police say he also was wanted on four arrest warrants from Allegheny County.
A Schnecksville, PA man was charged with driving under the influence on Route 65 on Dec. 4. According to police, an officer had stopped the police car after spotting a sign that had blown into the middle of the roadway. A speeding vehicle nearly hit the car and officer, according to the report. When the vehicle was stopped, the driver -- Thomas Kostelnik, 19 -- stepped out without putting the car in park. He was taken to the Avalon Police Station.
Vehicles making turns to and from side streets along Ohio River Boulevard were the catalysts for two accidents in the past week. One person was injured on Dec. 3 when a woman pulled into oncoming traffic from South Ohio Street. A chain reaction accident on Dec. 7 resulted in damage to three vehicles. Police say that one vehicle was stopped behind a car making an illegal left turn onto Locust Street when it was hit from behind by a car that also had been hit from behind by a vehicle whose driver was unable to stop.
Glenn Prady III, 28, of South Birmingham Avenue, was taken into custody at the Avalon Motel on Dec. 2 on an outstanding arrest warrant from the City of Pittsburgh.
A Marie Avenue resident reported Dec. 4 that someone had stolen a purse from the home.
The window in a vehicle parked on Orchard Avenue was found broken on Dec. 4.
