If you noticed a glow in the skies over Bellevue tonight, that would have been the heat from the Northgate Flames' season-opening win over Our Lady of Sacred Heart. Quarterback Jon Girvin rushed for four touchdowns to lead the home team to a 44-6 section win.
The Avonworth Antelopes had a much rougher night in Dormont, where they faced Bishop Canevin. Things started out great for the 'Lopes, with Bryan Vales hitting Ryan Schmid for a TD on Avonworth's very first possession. Andrew Niklaus scooted in for the next Antelope touchdown to put the visitors ahead 14-7. The game would be tied by the half, however, and five turnovers plus big plays from Canevin would result in a 21-14 loss.
