Northgate to vote on Glaser project

The Northgate School Board is expected to vote Monday on whether to spend at least $125,000 for improvements to a small Bellevue street used by students who walk to the middle - senior high school.

The Borough of Bellevue has obtained a $120,000 grant and has agreed to contribute $50,000 more toward the $300,000 project that will take over and rebuild a private portion of Glaser Avenue, and construct sidewalks along the street.

Board finance committee chairman Daniel O'Keefe said at the board committee of the whole meeting on Aug. 10 that the board already had voted to contribute $70,000 to the project, and now must decide whether to come up with at least $55,000 more.

That's assuming the actual price of the work comes in near the two-years-old estimate of $295,000. If bids come in higher, O'Keefe said, the school district may need to revisit the division of costs with Bellevue Borough officials.

Northgate business manager Marilynn Berner, in response to a question by board member Charles Miklos, said that a half dozen property owners have been told they will need to contribute to the cost of the project based on the number of feet their properties border the roadway. Berner said that the amount property owners have been told they will contribute is "insignificant," with the largest amount charged to an individual property owner in the area of $2,500.

Berner and board president Ruth Lorey mentioned that Northgate currently pays to maintain part of Glaser as well as for street lights, expenses they expect will shift to Bellevue once the project is complete and the private portion of Glaser is accepted as a borough street.
