The Avonworth girls’ basketball team closed out section play in a game at home last Thursday, staying in control throughout to defeat Northgate 55-15.

It was the final game of the year for the Flames, who finished with a record of 4-18.

Avonworth was led by Lauren Mayernik, who finished with 25 points that included three baskets from beyond the arc.

Avonworth set the tone early, playing their tough 1-3-1 zone defense and getting eight points each by L. Mayernik and Mackenzie Mayernik to take a huge lead. Montee'a Hunter added a transition basket, while Northgate got on the board with a jumper by Kira Nespaul and a free throw by Hanna Barsh as Avonworth led 18-3 at the end of the first quarter.

While the 'Lopes seemed to lose some of their intensity in the second quarter, the Flames continued to struggle with their offense. Avonworth got a basket each by the Mayernik sisters and a three-pointer by Erika Thomas. Northgate was 1-9 from the field, getting a free throw and a three-point bank shot from the top of the circle by Savannah Paladin as the 'Lopes increased their lead to 26-7 at the half.

L. Mayernik scored nine points in the third quarter including two three-pointers, while Paladin connected on two shots from beyond the arc as Avonworth led 37-13 going into the fourth quarter.

Avonworth continued to dominate, out-pointed Northgate 18-2 in the fourth quarter, and cruised to a 55-15 victory.

Northgate coach Neal Martin said of his team, "As the season has gone on we have improved, our young kids grew up."

Along with L. Mayernik's 25 points were M. Mayernik with 16 points and Hunter and Thomas each with five points. Northgate was led by Paladin's 10 points.
