NHCO flood-relief efforts

North Hills Community Outreach (NHCO) is partnering with first responders, the American Red Cross and the local municipalities in northern Allegheny County north of the City of Pittsburgh to ensure that families affected by recent flooding receive compassionate, effective assistance.

Financial donations are needed urgently. People can donate at nhco.org or mail a check to NHCO, 1975 Ferguson Rd., Allison Park, PA 15101. Other needed items include gift cards to home improvement stores, grocery stores and department stores, as well as cleaning supplies, nonperishable food and personal care items.

“People will need help replacing items commonly found in basements, such as furnaces, hot water heaters, washers, dryers, refrigerators and carpeting,” said Carolyn Pschirer, NHCO Director of Services. “Some families will need to relocate, and others will lose cars and will need assistance from our Transportation Assistance program.”

North Hills Community Outreach, in cooperation with first responders, will assess community needs and will refer donors and people in need to appropriate resources.

“Flood victims should call the United Way at 2-1-1 to be connected with the Red Cross for assessment,” Pschirer said. “We will work directly with the Red Cross to assist people with financial needs as well as food and other resources.” The nonprofit will assist families affected by flooding areas in its service area of northern Allegheny County, north of the City of Pittsburgh.

NHCO has a long history off assisting flood victims. The 30-year-old nonprofit, which assists local families in crisis, hardship and poverty, was established as a direct result of devastating local flooding in 1986. The nonprofit was a leader in local flood relief efforts in 2004 and 2007. In the months after Hurricane Ivan in 2004, NHCO received approximately 1,000 requests for help from households and 40 requests from businesses.

Those interested in helping with clean-up efforts may call the NHCO Millvale office at (412)408-3830 x 3218 and leave a name and number. Calls will be returned as soon as possible. Interested volunteers should wait to be contacted.
