Model school

The Northgate School District has been chosen to become a model school for the education of autistic children.

Ruth Strasser, Northgate’s director of special services, told the school board Monday that Northgate was chosen to participate in a National Inclusive Education Initiative that is being managed at the University of New Hampshire.

Northgate is one of 20 schools chosen to be demonstration models for inclusive practices for autistic children. Last year, the state offered a similar program.

The program will look at research-based practices and best practices for educating autistic students. Teachers will need to be trained, mostly through Webinars with the University of New Hampshire. All of the paper work is in place, including student participation forms. Two students have been recommended. The program also will include one special education teacher, three other teachers, and teachers’ aides.

There are no financial incentives.

A motion will be made to approve participation in this program at the next board meeting on Monday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m.
