Bellevue Council is expected to vote Feb. 22 on whether to double the price of parking at a meter in the borough.
The increase, from 25 cents per hour to 50 cents per hour, is proposed as part of a “revenue generation action plan” presented to council by Police Chief matt Sentner.
The plan also calls for increased fines for meter and street sweeping violations.
At Tuesday’s council meeting,. member Jane Braunlich said that she did not believe that it was a good idea to increase the parking meter fees due to the potential impact on the borough's businesses. This view was expressed during the public contributions section of the meeting by resident Michelle Smith, who stated that such an increase would give the impression that Bellevue was not business-friendly. Council member Linda Woshner agreed, stating that Bellevue is within 20 minutes of malls with free parking. She pointed out that the increased parking fees could be offset by allowing businesses to make more money, which is subject to taxes.
