Lady ’Lopes suffer disappointing loss

By JIM RUMBLE

The Avonworth softball team saw its three- game winning streak come to an end this past week with a disappointing 11-10 loss to Brentwood at home on Wednesday.

The same two teams were scheduled to play each other at Brentwood on Thursday, May 6, with the results not available at press time. The Lady ‘Lopes would need to win the rematch to secure third place in the section and qualify for the WPIAL playoffs.

On Thursday, April 29, the 'Lopes hosted Cornell and won easily 11-1. The highlight of that game was a grand slam home run by Natalie Zivic in the second inning that helped propel the 'Lopes to an early 7-0 lead.

Several players had multiple-hit nights, including Ali Chambers, 3-for-3; Marissa Milbert, 2-for-3 with two RBIs; Kelsey Knox, 2-for-3 with three RBIs; and Laura Presutti, 2-for-3.

Pitcher Julianne Hirsch struck out four batters and helped the cause with an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Head coach Chris Knox said of his team's 12-hit performance, "Up until now we've been struggling a little at the plate and we're a better hitting team than what we've been showing."

Avonworth played North Catholic last Friday at LaRoche College and, after entering the final inning with a four-run, lead managed to hold off the Trojans 6-5.

Hirsch struck out nine batters while going 2-for-4 from the plate, including an RBI.

Chambers was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Zivic 3-for-4 including a solo home run, Milbert 3-for-4 with an RBI, Erin Zakor 2-for-3. Tracey Catanzarite and Knox each had one hit.

Avonworth's third win over the past week came on Tuesday, May 4, in a nonsection game against Oakland Catholic, 10-4.
