Bellevue residents could find themselves subjected to street sweeping parking restrictions year 'round.
"I want this enforced," safety committee chairman David Gillingham Jr. said of the borough's 1981 ordinance that provides for the weekly parking prohibitions on particular streets to be in place all year, rather than just the April through November period that has been the practice for decades.
Mayor George Doscher said that the extended restrictions would allow the public works department to expand services such as street sweeping and curb and street repair, making the borough look better.
Council president Kathy Coder said that she had heard from many residents who opposed extending the street sweeping season because of problems with the availability of parking spaces in their neighborhoods. She questioned whether the street sweeper really would be used in the winter.
"My concern is, I get on my parka and my pajamas and move my car, and that street sweeper never comes," she said at council's work session on June 8.
She also said that she did not want an uninformed public getting tickets for not moving their cars in the winter.
"We better educate the public. I don't want them getting nailed when they don't have a clue," Coder said.
