Demolition began this week on the Ohio Township Volunteer Fire Company’s social hall and fire station on Roosevelt Road. By next spring, the VFC hopes to have a new building in its place.

Chief Jeff Frazier said that the current building, built in the 1950s, had many problems, among them a lack of space for critical VFC functions, energy inefficiency, and aging boiler, and a social hall that was no longer being used.

The new fire station, he said, will have room for equipment and training, office space and even bunk rooms for when firefighters need to stay at the station during weather emergencies. The exercise room currently housed in the Ohio Township Police Department building but obtained through a grant by the fire company, will be moved to the new building as well, Frazier said.

The project is being paid for by the fire company itself, according to the chief. The new building is expected to be completed by early April.

Fire trucks are temporarily being housed in a building at the township park.
