Coach hired

The Northgate girls' basketball team will have a new coach next year, who will come complete with an impressive winning record.

David Sylvester was hired by the school board at its meeting on Monday.

According to athletic director Bryan Kyle, Sylvester has a winning record in both girls' basketball and girls' soccer. He coached the Mars varsity girls' team to section titles and participation in both the WPIAL championship and state quarterfinals. He had similar success as the head coach at Elwood City, and led the Seneca Valley girls' soccer team to a WPIAL championship and four section titles.

Sylvester takes over for Bill Quinn, who drew criticism from some parents. He will be paid $5,995 for the 2010-11 season.
