Ben Avon Council has approved a garbage collection contract with Waste Management that will be effective from 2012 to 2016.
The new contract will include an e-waste option. Borough secretary Carmella Hallstein told council Tuesday that Waste Management made two proposals to the borough -- one an extension of the existing contract, and the other adding an e-waste option to the contract.
The e-waste option provides that Waste Management will pick up and dispose of old electronics such as TVs and computer screens. It also will pick up items such as paint, auto batteries, antifreeze and florescent lights. Hallstein said that she was informed that starting in 2012, landfills will no longer be permitted to accept these items.
Ben Avon property owners will pay $187.80 per year for garbage collection in 2011, with the price going up to $211.44 in 2016. The price for the new contract with an e-waste option will add $12 to each resident's garbage bill for the first year. By the last year of the contract, the e-waste option will add $13.56 to a resident's yearly garbage bill.
Waste Management will send information regarding e-waste to residents. Residents will need to call Waste Management and arrange to have e-waste materials picked up.
