Bellevue checkpoint nets 16 DUI arrests

Bellevue’s first DUI checkpoint held last Saturday night processed more than 800 vehicles and ended in the arrest or citation of dozens of drivers.

“Team DUI” of the Pennsylvania DUI Association launched the checkpoint, coordinated by the West Hills DUI Task Force, on Ohio River Boulevard in Bellevue, near the Shiloh Avenue intersection. According to Bellevue Police Chief Matt Sentner, both north- and southbound vehicles were stopped between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m.

According to Team DUI, some 837 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. Officers arrested 16 adult drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol, while another adult was suspected of driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

One minor was arrested for underage drinking.

Police also cited 12 people for driving with a suspended operator’s license, and 15 people were cited for various other Motor Vehicle Code violations.

Some 30 police officers participated in the checkpoint, including nine Bellevue Police officers. Other participating departments were Carnegie Borough, Coraopolis Borough, Crescent Township, Edgeworth Borough, Findlay Township, Kennedy Township, Leetsdale Borough, Moon Town-ship, Ohio Township, Robinson Township, Sewickley Borough and Stowe Township.

Bellevue only recently joined the West Hills DUI Task Force, and this was the first DUI checkpoint conducted in the borough. All arrests and citations were processed through the Bellevue Police Department, according to Sentner.

Other area checkpoints have been held on Ohio River Boulevard at Atlantic Avenue in Emsworth.
