Two senior Avon-worth athletes shared the spotlight in an Oct. 2 assembly when KDKA awarded Molly Frew the "Extra Effort Award," and ESPN Radio 1250 named Jimmy Zubik “Athlete of the Week.”
Introducing Molly, KDKA news personality Bob Pompeani said that Molly "…exemplifies all that can be expected from a star athlete."
Basketball coach Bob Schulz described Molly as "…an outstanding athlete with a tremendous work ethic," adding, "…and she's always smiling!"
In addition to basketball, Molly runs cross country and plays softball.
The award included a $200 check for the school.
Jimmy qualified for his award by tallying the highest number of fan votes during the week of Sept. 20.
ESPN radio staff member Jim Graci thanked everyone for voting, read Jimmy's stat line for the week he was nominated, and presented him with a plaque.
Football coach Jason Kekseo described Jimmy as being "…an incredible talent. His commitment and hard work represent Avonworth football. His athletic ability, great vision and positive leadership have been such an asset to our program."
Molly is the daughter of Maureen and Tim Frew of Kilbuck Township, and Jimmy is the son of Carolyn and Jim Zubik of Ohio Township.
