A Chestnut Avenue woman came close to being scammed by a caller before her husband stepped in and ended the attempted theft by deception.

Police say that the woman received a call from someone who pretended to be her grandson. He claimed to have been arrested and said that he needed her to wire him $2,000 to get out of jail. The woman’s husband took the phone and began asking the man questions, at which time the caller hung up.

In other news from Avalon Police, police seized a loaded handgun and arrested a man after being called to a domestic assault on Marie Avenue on June 19. Charged with simple assault was Jason Rocco, 33.

A Marie Avenue resident told police on June 23 that she believed her purse had been stolen during a party at her house.

Two people were picked up on outstanding arrest warrants. James Milburn, 46, of Trafford, was arrested on June 22. Shannon Lee Kenney, 34, of Spring Garden, was arrested June 23.
