Antelopes outrun Tigers for 41-12 win

First team, second team, it didn’t seem to matter as the Avonworth Antelopes rolled over the Wilkinsburg Tigers last Friday, 41-12.

"We got a lot of people playing tonight," head coach Jason Kekseo said after the game.

The section away game started slow, with only seven points scored in the first quarter, but picked up quick in the second. By halftime, Avonworth led the Tigers 34-0.

Four different Antelopes scored touchdowns in the victory that improves the 'Lopes’ record to 4-0 overall, and 2-0 in section play.

Avonworth was able to score on their first offensive drive of the game. They took possession at the Tigers' 47-yard line after a good punt return by Jimmy Zubik. After three unsuccessful plays, the 'Lopes were set to punt facing a fourth-and-six, but an offside penalty against Wilkinsburg made it an appetizing fourth-and-one. Avonworth went for it and got the first down on a pitch to Zubik around the left side.

On the next play, Zubik took the ball off-tackle and bounced it out to the far sidelines, picking up 33 yards on the play. Avonworth had a first-and-goal inside the Tigers' 3-yard line. It took only two consecutive runs up the middle from Jake Szolis to get the 'Lopes into the end zone for their first score of the night. First-year kicker Houston Hunt added the extra point and Avonworth led 7-0 with 7:59 left in the first quarter.

Both teams were able to sustain drives for the rest of the first, but neither team was able to put any points on the scoreboard. That was not the case in the second quarter, however, with the 'Lopes’ offense scoring on three consecutive drives.

On the first play of the second quarter, Zubik started running left, but quickly reversed field, going 57 yards into the end zone for his first score of the game. Hunt again added the point after and Avonworth was up 14-0 with 11:44 to go in the half.

Wilkinsburg was determined to score in their next drive, after returning the kick-off back to Avonworth's 41-yard line, but the 'Lopes defense was solid. Avonworth picked up two sacks, one on a fourth-and-five, to end the Tigers' hopes of getting on the scoreboard. The 'Lopes took possession at their own 35-yard line.

The 'Lopes faced difficult downs twice on the drive, but the Tigers ultimately were unable to completely shut down Avonworth's offense. Avonworth was faced with a third-and-17 when quarterback Tom Turnbull hooked up with Zubik on a screen to the right side of the field that picked up 54 yards and gave the 'Lopes a first down at Wilkinsburg's 30-yard line.

The 'Lopes were looking at a fourth-and-three on the next set of downs, but again the offense came up big. Junior Zack Wasko took the ball on an end-around that picked up 15 yards and extended the drive.

On the ensuing play, Zubik took a hand-off up the middle and into the end zone from the Tigers' own 12 for his second score of the day. The extra point was good and the 'Lopes had a commanding lead, 21-0, with 5:47 left in the second quarter.

On Wilkinsburg's next drive, the 'Lopes’ defense sacked the Tigers' quarterback on fourth down, giving Avonworth the ball back with good field position.

The 'Lopes took over on Wilkinsburg's 45-yard line and, on first down, Turnbull completed a pass to Chad Stewart for 11 yards.

The ensuing play resulted in a 34-yard run by Turnbull that gave the 'Lopes a first-and-goal at the Wilkinsburg 5. And again, two consecutive runs, this time by Mike Simmons, got Avonworth into the end zone. The point after was blocked, but the 'Lopes still led 27-0 with only 1:44 left in the first half.

Avonworth would add one more touchdown to their lead before half time. A pass on Wilkinsburg's next drive was intercepted by Zubik, who sped off into the end zone to put the 'Lopes up by 33 points. Hunt added the extra point, and with less than a minute left in the half, the 'Lopes led 34-0.

Neither team could break the goal line in the third quarter. Wilkinsburg scored on their opening drive of the fourth quarter, but the two-point conversion was no good and the score stood at 34-6 with 11:33 left to play in the quarter.

The ensuing kick-off was bobbled by the 'Lopes and recovered by Wilkinsburg, giving the Tigers possession at Avonworth's 24-yard line. Wilkinsburg was able to capitalize on the drive, thanks to a defensive pass interference play against the 'Lopes on fourth down.

On the next play, a Wilkinsburg running back took the ball into the end zone from 11 yards out to put the score at 34-12.

The 'Lopes answered with a touchdown drive of their own. Avonworth started out at their own 37-yard line, but drove the ball all the way to the Tigers' 3-yard line before getting into the end zone. Sophomore Brian Vales was able to push himself across the goal line and in for the touchdown on a quarterback keeper. The point after was good and Avonworth was up 41-12.

Freshman Isaac Miller's interception ended Wilkinsburg's next drive and any chances of a comeback.

Turnbull completed four passes for 113 yards and ran for another 31. Zubik finished the night with 188 total yards, picking up 134 yards on 10 carries.

On defense, Ben Kramer had three sacks, and Jeff Wehner had one.
