Abandoned vehicles

Avalon may try a multi-pronged approach to clear borough streets of unregistered vehicles officials say are being parked by the owner of a local automotive repair business.

Asked to look into the problem by council, solicitor Megan Ott said that the borough can use three different laws to clean up the streets.

The first, she said, involves the zoning code, which prohibits businesses storing materials on public streets. The state motor vehicle code can be used against the actual owner of the vehicle, while the borough’s nuisance ordinance can help officials go after the owners of property in front of which the vehicles are parked.

Meanwhile, council member Dave Dixon questioned why that business at issue was being paid $421 for the repair of a window in a street department pick-up truck, something Dixon said could have been accomplished in-house for about $50.

“It’s like a parent yelling at a kid then giving him a cookie,” Dixon said.
